Castellane Place is located at the top of rue de Rome, in the 6th arrondissement of Marseille. In its centre, rises a beautiful fountain. Let’s be honest: the place is just a roundabout, but it’s only a matter of time before it becomes a proper place.

“Castellane” as we call it, like Saint-Charles train station, is one of Marseille hotspots. It is indeed the departure point of many public transports and the area is always crowded. More information here

The fountain is 25 metres high and called “Fontaine Cantini from its donator’s name, Jules Cantini, a sculptor and famous patron of Marseille. He offered the fountain to Marseille city in 1911. The place hosts many bars and restaurants and even a cinema. It aligns perfectly with the Porte d’Aix located at the city’s North entrance.

It’s a real shame to see so many cars on this lovely place. This is why a project has been launched to convert it to a more pedestrian zone, following the conversion of Paris Place de la République.

Tips & anecdotes

In place of Jules Cantini fountain, there used to be an obelisk on the Place Castellane. It is now located on Mazargues roundabout in the 9th arrondissement.

There are so many restaurants and cafés, it’s difficult to pick one. But if you feel like having Tapas, we highly recommend the Brasserie Le Castellane, on number 16.
