Located between the Fort Saint-Jean and La Major cathedral, the J4 esplanade offers an incredible panorama of the sea and the Pharo Palace (on the opposite bank). It is also where Marseille emblematic museum, the MuCEM, is located.

View from the Pharo Palace

The J4 Esplanade, also called Promenade Robert Laffont, is right at Saint-Jean Fort feet. Until 1997, a warehouse dedicated to port activities was on the site and baptised as “J4”. This explains why the Marseillais still call the place by this name.

This beautiful esplanade extends on 20 000 m², surrounded by famous landmarks like the Pharo palace or La Major cathedral. Since Marseille-Provence 2013, it hosts the MuCEM and the Villa Méditerranée. Walk around and enjoy the sea view or stop by for a picnic on the benches or stairs.

At the esplanade’s bottom, stop a moment to admire the boats

Tips & anecdotes

We advise you to organise a day with a cultural visit to the MuCEM and the Fort Saint-Jean, and a long walk on the esplanade.

If you’re looking for a gourmet spot, stop at La Cuisine, the brasserie of famous chef Gérald Passédat. The restaurant boasts a gorgeous terrace offering an incredible view of the Méditerranée.
