The Cantini Museum is located right in Marseille city’s centre in a gorgeous hôtel particulier of the 17th Century. It shows modern art from 1900 to the 80’s. Some of its collections complete Marseille Musée d’art contemporain ones.
This beautiful edifice located rue Grignan finally ended up at the end of the 18th Century in Jules Cantini hands, a Marseillais sculptor and an art lover. In 1916, he makes a donation to Marseille city on the condition that it becomes a modern art museum.
At first, the museum showed art from the 12th to the 19th Century but progressively specialised in modern art (1900-1960). Today, the Musée Cantini holds one the most beautiful French public collections dedicated to the 20th century.
