This is Travel in Marseille Provence travel guide, a guide made by Marseille people for everyone. Here you will find out about Provence best places and travel tips. This page takes you on a journey to Plan d’Aups Sainte Baume, one of the few towns of the mountains range.

Located at an altitude of 686, at the bottom of La Sainte Baume mountains range, Plan d’Aups is very different from the Provence Verte other towns. You will see neither vines nor olives trees, for the town is a real mountain village with wide meadows. Discover its heritage, its little centre and the mountains around, a peaceful and non typical Provençal site.

Take a walk in Plan d’Aups

Plan d’Aups Sainte Baume town is labelled “Pays d’art et d’histoire de la Provence Verte” (land of art and history of the Green Provence) and offers an itinerary to learn all about its heritage. Following this course, you will cross all the town landmarks on your way: the Romanesque church, the Roman stele, “le couvent de Béthanie” (convent).

You will then take your car to visit three other sites, near the town: “La ferme de Brasque” (Brasque’s farm), the old mining district, the site of Giniez and Edouard Trouin garage workshop which was designed by the famous architect Le Corbusier and is now an exhibition gallery.

Discover local craftsmanship : a cabinetmaker workshop

A cabinetmaker or “ébéniste” works in Plan d’Aups. Gérard Castelli makes pens in precious wood, wood of Provence or exotic wood, and other items. Discover his workshop and learn more about his passion, it will be for sure, as we say in French, a “belle rencontre”.

Take a walk in la Sainte Baume mountains range

La Sainte Baume is one of the many treasures of Provence, an impressive crest made of limestone rocks that rises to 1100 metres of altitude. From east to west, it is about 14Km of cliffs. Its wildlife is rich and unique and so is its history. While the walking trail “le Saint-Pilon” is easy and takes about 3 hours and half, “le Pic de Bertagne” is shorter but more difficult.

Le Saint-Pilo: trail starting point from l’Hôtellerie de la Sainte Baume, red and white trail markings, then blue and yellow. / Le Pic de Bertagne: trail starting point from la Maison de Pays, yellow and blue trail markings, then blue, then, red, then green.

Walk up to Sainte Marie Madeleine Cave

It would be a shame not to visit Sainte Marie Madeleine cave if you are in Plan d’Aups. Located in the middle of the mountain, this cave is said to be the last shelter of Sainte Marie Madeleine before her death. It is now a gorgeous sanctuary (where some of her relics stay) that you can reach in 45 minutes walk.
